How Are SMD Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Made? | Manufacturing Process

5min Readtime

SMD aluminum electrolytic capacitors are compact electronic components widely used in automotive electronics, power supplies, industrial equipment, LED lighting, and consumer electronics.

At Jarson Electronics, our SMD aluminum electrolytic capacitors are manufactured through a complete production process, including Incoming Quality Inspection (IQC), aluminum foil cutting, nailing and winding, baking, assembly, cleaning, aging, inspection, and tape-and-reel packaging.

1. Incoming Quality Inspection (IQC)

Before production begins, all key raw materials including aluminum foil, separator paper, electrolyte, and aluminum cases undergo Incoming Quality Control (IQC).

Strict inspection ensures material consistency and provides a reliable foundation for stable capacitor performance.

2. Aluminum Foil Cutting

High-quality aluminum foil is precisely cut according to different capacitor specifications.

Accurate cutting dimensions help maintain consistent electrical characteristics and ensure stable performance during mass production.

3. Nailing and Winding Process

The anode and cathode aluminum foils are connected with electrode tabs through the nailing process.

The foils are then separated by insulating paper and carefully wound into a capacitor element. This process directly affects key parameters including capacitance, ESR, and ripple current capability.

4. Baking and Assembly

After winding, capacitor elements undergo a controlled baking process to remove moisture and improve stability.

The elements are then assembled into aluminum cases and filled with electrolyte to complete the capacitor structure.

5. Cleaning and Aging Process

After assembly, capacitors are cleaned and undergo an aging process under controlled temperature and voltage conditions.

The aging process stabilizes electrical characteristics and helps screen products to ensure long-term reliability.

6. Base Forming, Inspection and Tape-and-Reel Packaging

After aging, capacitors proceed through base forming, electrical testing, and appearance inspection.

Qualified products are packaged in tape-and-reel format, making them suitable for automated SMT assembly lines.

Jarson Electronics applies strict quality control throughout the SMD aluminum electrolytic capacitor manufacturing process.

Our quality management systems and testing capabilities include:

  • ISO 9001 Quality Management System

  • ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
